School-Sponsored Student Media
The amended Policy 101-9: School-Sponsored Student Media (Attachment A) was approved by the Hawaiʻi State Board of Education on May 23, 2024. Per Act 24, Session Laws of Hawaiʻi 2022 (Act 24, SLH 2022; Attachment B), the Department amended its previous policy to meet the requirements of the law, including:
Protection for student journalists’ freedom of speech and freedom of the press;
Protection for student media advisors from retaliation in the event of their protecting student journalists from censorship;
Provision of time, space, and manner for distribution of school-sponsored media;
Stipulation of specific instances in which school-sponsored media can be limited; and
Stipulation of the timely appeals process that student journalists can exercise in the event that school-sponsored media is limited.
